Grand Atlantic - Smoke & Mirrors

Right. Pay attention. In your hands you have the first official release from new Brisbane band Grand Atlantic, a five-song sort-of EP that's really a double-A side with three bonus tracks. Make sense? Stay with us, it will.

Grand Atlantic, by the way, are the hotly-tipped up-and-comers that have been rocking Brisbane for a few months and are starting to attract attention from the UK and North America. They aren't going to remain a secret for too much longer…

So, about a minute into the first song, 'Smoke & Mirrors', you to start to get it – these four guys conjure up a heady mix of full-throttle guitar rock and razor-sharp choruses that's perfect for summer, and at 3 minutes long, is destined to be blaring out of backyard radios and at beachside barbeques up and down this wide brown land. It's not, however, disposable or lightweight – this is music that is thoughtfully-constructed, exuberantly-played and yet still deadly serious in its intent.

'Burning Brighter' is different – who else changes time signatures like this? – and almost as immediately catchy. Lyrically, it's all about not giving up or giving in, about perseverance… musically, it's as fine and funky a piece of pop music as you'll hear this year.

The B-sides show Grand Atlantic's versatility – the almost-classic 'Friendly Fire', the soaring soundscape of 'Theme Song For Today', and the pathos of their cover of Abba's 'The Winner Takes It All'.

So there you have it – a pretty handy sampler for the band's debut album, which will be out in February 2007, and which promises to place Grand Atlantic firmly in the spotlight both here and overseas.

The band will be out playing these songs over the next few weeks in Melbourne (Oct.8th), Brisbane (14th) and Sydney (27th) as part of the Popboomerang 5th Birthday celebrations – check the website for details. And come November, they'll be touring again in their own right.
