Grand Atlantic

Grand Atlantic

There's a wonderful thing that happens when a band steps out from the shadows of their influences and confidently asserts their own sound, their own thoughts and their own reason for being - people listen and take note. And so it is for Brisbane's Grand Atlantic - a coming of age, a sublime arrival, a statement of intent that brooks no argument. Those shadows of The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Big Star chase each other around some of the most sublimely-crafted pop music you'll hear at any time, let alone in 2007 from a band you've never heard of.

Their story so far is one filled with tales of near-death experiences, episodes of heartbreak and loss and moments of desperation and triumph, all mixed together in a brutal cocktail of music-making, friendship and the pursuit of a defining sound. However, these are stories for another day.

In October 2005, Grand Atlantic formed at a coffee shop in Brisbane's Paddington, emerging from past musical expressions and experiences. As Tonjip, several members had toured nationally with the likes of Rhubarb and Diana Ah Naid, as well as completing numerous local tours and supports. 2004 had been a big year for them, with their single "Coolite" on national Triple J rotation for more than 20 weeks, reaching #3 on that station's net 50 in August. Their great run included generous national commercial and community radio airplay, several national tours and solid support for the single's accompanying video. But it all takes its toll. When Tonjip wound down in mid-2005, the decision was made to re-group, re-load and head back out into the maelstrom that is the music industry. And so you have it, ladies and gentlemen - this is Grand Atlantic.

It all pours out of your speakers when you put the album on - a brave, affecting, uplifting set of songs that showcase the yearning vulnerability in Phil Usher's voice, the pop perfection of their song-writing and the precise ability of the band to understand and capture the essence of each tune. With a perfectionist production quality that bears witness to endless hours in the studio and a commitment to getting it just right, this is an album that revives memories of pop's glorious past and provides clear signposts to a brighter future. Let it into your world - you'll be glad you did.
