In 2010, Underminers, featuring Justin (Hap) Heyward (vocals), Chris Morris (guitars, keys) and Laurence Nulty (drums), have something special to offer. Having found a new home in Popboomerang Records, “Heart Part of Your Mind” is their third album and their most assured and intimate yet. Heyward elaborates’ on his relationship with the label, “I looked at the bands on Popboomerang and I liked the diversity of the roster and the strong sense of solidarity in that there were other bands out there creating and producing heartfelt, mysterious music. I loved the fact that there are still labels who are waving the flag for original and honest song writing. Fortunately for us, Scott Thurling at Popboomerang was very positive about our latest bunch of songs!”

Recorded, mixed and Mastered by Graeme Hodge in Redwood Studios Ballarat, “Heart Part of Your Mind” is a deceptively quiet musical beast. Morris’s musical ideas were usually the springboard for Hayward’s lyrics, to be later followed by Nulty’s ability to find the right feel and place for their ideas. “We all go back a long way. When it comes to creating a kind of atmosphere for songs to come out, we seem to know and trust each other a great deal. I believe this album represents us at the peak of our powers in this regard” states the singer.”

Chris Morris often creates a mood of melancholy in the sounds he comes up with but they seem a perfect fit to Justin’s words and melodies. Hap muses “We have an unspoken song writing partnership based around a kind of sadness that is impossible for me to articulate. What we do comes out very satisfying but it seems always veiled in melancholy. We laugh about it sometimes because it is just this unstoppable force and we just let it happen. There is obviously a side to us that is drawn to this kind of music. We never analyse it too much”

Hayward also believes that this is a very personal album in terms of the lyrics. “They really speak for themselves. Or to put in another way, they are mostly speaking directly to my wife and the family we have created and the very grown up world we now find ourselves in.” The words, moods, questions, frustrations and celebrations featured throughout the lyric sheet demonstrate, to Hayward: “All the messy and unique stuff that comes with walking the same kind of path with the love of your life - through thick and thin.”

And the title of the album? “Well, the “heart part of your mind” refers to things being said and done with feeling ahead of thinking. That is what I respond to best and that is how I write as well.”

The artwork is an obvious homage to one of Hayward’s favourite bands, The Smiths. “My cousin played me Hatful of Hollow when I was a teenager. I had never heard anything like it –it sounded so strange and so unlike anything else I was hearing on Countdown or on commercial radio. The effect on me was huge, a celebration of being awkward and lost and an outsider. I was sixteen, clumsy and shy – it was love at first listen.” laughs the singer.
